Gifts of Mineral Interests: Fueling Education and Opportunity

Donating mineral interests, such as oil, gas, gold, silver, or other precious metals, may be a unique and impactful way to support a cause you care about, such as Utah Valley University (UVU). If you own mineral rights that produce income or have appreciated in value, this type of gift may offer potential tax advantages and help you achieve your philanthropic goals.

Potential Benefits to You

  • Receive a charitable income tax deduction for the value of your gift
  • Avoid income tax on royalties, which can be especially beneficial for high-producing assets
  • Explore life income options that may allow you to receive payments during your lifetime while supporting a cause you care about

Potential Benefits to UVU

  • Fund scholarships and academic programs that prepare students for high-demand careers
  • Support students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation and non-traditional students
  • Strengthen Utah?s workforce and economy by investing in education and innovation
  • Help create lasting impact by investing in students, programs, and initiatives that shape the future of our region

Opportunities to Consider

  • Gift of Land with Mineral Rights
You can donate all or a portion of land that includes mineral rights. Because UVU does not hold mineral interests, the gift must be marketable and able to be sold upon receipt. If accepted, this type of gift may provide a charitable income tax deduction and help UVU expand opportunities for students, academic programs, and initiatives.
  • Gift of Royalties
If royalty income from mineral interests is contributing to a higher tax burden, one option to consider is donating a portion or all of those royalties. Since UVU cannot hold mineral interests or royalty-producing assets, any gift must be immediately marketable and will be sold to support the university's mission. This type of gift may offer tax advantages depending on your individual circumstances and can help fund scholarships, programs, and initiatives that benefit UVU students.
  • Charitable Life Estate
If you would like to make a gift while continuing to use your land during your lifetime, a charitable life estate may be an option to consider. This arrangement allows you to retain use of the property for life, while potentially receiving a charitable income tax deduction and supporting UVU's future. Because UVU does not hold real estate long-term, the property must be marketable, and the gift is subject to review by the university?s Gift Acceptance Committee.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust (CRUT)
If your mineral interests are not immediately marketable, there may still be a meaningful way to make a difference. By contributing them to a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT), you can create a gift that benefits both you and the university. A CRT may provide income for you or your loved ones, offer potential tax advantages, and ultimately support UVU's students and programs.

Gift Acceptance Considerations

UVU welcomes gifts that can be used directly or sold to support its mission. All gifts-in-kind are subject to review by the university?s Gift Acceptance Committee. UVU does not hold mineral interests or royalty-producing assets. These gifts must be immediately marketable and convertible to cash. Whether a gift can be accepted will depend on the university?s gift acceptance policies and the ability to sell the asset.

Why Your Gift Matters
