Leading for the Future
Luke and Cynthia spent many years volunteering and supporting Utah Valley University (UVU), a cause close to their hearts. As longtime advocates for education and community development, they wanted to give back in a way that would help UVU fulfill its mission while also caring for their family's future.
- Luke: "We heard that now is one of the best times in our lives to set up a charitable lead trust. We could fund the trust with cash or stock, and it would pay income to UVU for a number of years. After that, the remaining trust value would go to our children."
- Cynthia: "We loved the idea that our children would be well cared for, and that we could see the impact of our gifts to UVU right away."
Luke and Cynthia were also pleased to learn that the trust offered significant tax advantages. The income paid to UVU qualified for a charitable deduction, which helped reduce the taxes on the eventual gift to their children. After the trust term ended, their children would receive the remaining assets with minimal tax liability.
- Luke: "Cynthia and I found that by using a charitable lead trust, we could accomplish both of our goals, that of supporting UVU during our lifetimes and providing for our family in the future."
While UVU was their primary charitable beneficiary, Luke and Cynthia also included a few other nonprofits in their broader estate plan, ensuring their legacy would reflect the full range of causes they care about.
